“The body is the brains first teacher” Jill Connell and Cheryl McCarthy
I feel so fortunate to be able to spend my time with families at class, being part of the joyful experiences, close community network and witness growth and development within these groups.
Since receiving my degree in Primary Education with specialisms in Early Years Education and Special Educational Needs, I spent 8 years working as a Primary School Teacher in both England and Wales. During this time, I realised the power that movement has on children’s cognitive learning skills. This sent me on a journey to find out the science behind this.
My research led me to the work of Anne Green Gilbert a dance educator who devised a way to integrate the body and mind through a series of specific movements and promote healthy brain development. Her ‘BrainDance’ is now used in classrooms around the world.
I discovered how rhymes, music and movement can be combined in order to support our babies and young children’s development of healthy brains and bodies. Coupled with my knowledge of early years education practices I started to design dance programmes for babies and young children. These programmes were first enjoyed under the name of ‘Little Stars’.
I furthered my understanding having studied with another inspirational dance educator Jessica Griffin-Baudin, completing the ‘Intellidance Method Certification’ programme. A syllabus that has been used to bring braindance principles to babies and young children alongside a conceptional dance method.
